Kiefer Sutherland made an indelible mark when he starred as Jack Bauer in the thriller spy series "24" back at the turn of the century. After the series ended its eight-season run in 2010, Sutherland has done a "24" reunion miniseries, played an accidental president on three seasons of "Designated Survivor" and played a key role as the leader of a private military contractor alongside Chris Pine in the excellent 2022 thriller "The Contractor."

What he hasn't found is a role that uses the particular set of acting skills that made "24" such a compelling show. Now he's back with "Rabbit Hole," a new eight-episode spy thriller series set to stream on Paramount+ starting March 26, 2023.

Paramount debuted a trailer for the series during the NFL's AFC Championship game this past weekend.

Working from the tagline "Deception Is Reality," Sutherland's new show features surveillance, explosions, interrogation, gunplay, expensive brown liquor and pills dumped into the mouth straight from the bottle. The trailer has the same kind of ticking-clock energy that "24" fans loved.

Paramount has been vague so far as to exactly what the story of "Rabbit Hole" will be, but we do know that Sutherland plays John Weir, a corporate spy who's framed for murder by a mysterious power out to control the world. As he looks to clear his name, he finds that he's fighting for the future of democracy.

Is John Weir a military veteran with spec ops training? If the producers follow the unwritten rules of television espionage, we're likely to find out that Weir carries a psychological burden from his tactical days and that he's struggling as he cashes the enormous paychecks his corporate work delivers.

"Rabbit Hole" also stars Rob Yang ("The Capture"), Charles Dance ("The Crown"), and Meta Golding ("The Hunger Games" series). The show was created by the team of writer/directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who previously made the Afghanistan War comedy "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" and have more recently directed episodes of "This Is Us" and "WeCrashed."

Will "Rabbit Hole" be a story about a veteran who's tasked with saving the world or just a promising spy thriller? We'll have to wait until March to find out.
