Korean War Movie 'Devotion' Gets a New Thanksgiving Release Date

"Devotion," the Korean War movie about the real-life friendship between naval aviators Tom Hudner and Jesse Brown, has been delayed from its original Oct. 21, 2022, release date and will now open in theaters for the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

That's sure to disappoint anyone who's been itching to see the movie starring Glen Powell, currently starring as "Hangman" in "Top Gun: Maverick," and Jonathan Majors, the actor who's playing interstellar villain Kang the Conqueror in the upcoming run of Marvel movies.

On the other hand, this date change is a sure sign that Sony Pictures really likes "Devotion" and thinks it has got a movie that can be both a box-office hit and garner some serious attention during awards season.

Hudner was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir on Dec. 4, 1950. After Brown was shot down by enemy fire, Hudner crashed his own plane in an attempt to rescue his close friend.

Brown was the pilot who broke the color barrier in naval aviation, and Majors' performance in the trailer suggests that his struggles will make up a big part of the story. Powell gives off serious old-school movie star vibes in "Top Gun: Maverick," and "Devotion" seems like a chance for him to step up and become his generation's version of Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise.

"Devotion" is based on Adam Makos' bestselling book, "Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice." The Korean War has been Hollywood's forgotten war, so this release has the potential to correct a huge hole in Hollywood's representation of U.S. military history. It may be hard to believe, but "Devotion" will be the first movie about the conflict from a major studio since "Pork Chop Hill" starring Gregory Peck in 1959.
