Fifty years ago if you asked people their greatest fears, they’d tell you public speaking and death. Now, it seems those two might still make the list, but go ahead and add “student loans” on there, too. Luckily, there are a number of scholarships available to military children and one of those application windows just opened.

Now in its 20th year, the Scholarships for Military Children Program operated by the Fisher House Foundation will award 500 students with a $2,000 scholarship grant in 2020. To date, 11,314 military children have shared $19,126,000 in scholarship grants.

According to the Fisher House Foundation's website, the Scholarships for Military Children Program was created in recognition of the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community. It is the intent of the program that a scholarship funded through contributions be awarded annually for each commissary operated by the Defense Commissary Agency worldwide.

The scholarship is primarily funded by companies who sell their products at commissaries. While the scholarship is one of their programs, Fisher House’s primary mission is to provide military families housing close to a loved one in the hospital for an illness, disease or injury. You’ll find them near many military and VA hospitals.

Students are eligible to apply if they possess a Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card (DD Form 173), and have a parent or parents who serve or served in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard. Recipients must be enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in a four-year undergraduate college or university, accredited in the U.S. or a two-year community college. They must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 basis.
