Pokemon Legends: Z-A released version 1.0.1 just over a day before its October 16 launch date. While Patch 1.0.1 does not require much storage space to download and install, The Pokemon Company stated that the update will be necessary for Pokemon Legends: Z-A players to utilize the game's online features.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A will herald the return of Mega Evolution as a core battle gimmick and mark the arrival of a new, action-based battle system reminiscent of the Xenoblade Chronicles games. Pokemon Legends: Z-A will also take players back to Lumiose City, which first appeared in Pokemon X and Y. Though the game will not be released until October 16, early reviews of Pokemon Legends: Z-A have been mostly positive. As of this writing, Pokemon Legends: Z-A outscored one of its biggest competitors, Digimon Story: Time Stranger, on OpenCritic by a slight margin of 82 to 80.

Though preloading Pokemon Legends: Z-A is now available for users who already purchased the game via the Nintendo eShop, one more step will be necessary to enjoy some of its core features. Pokemon Legends: Z-A released version 1.0.1 late on October 14, just under two days before the game's release. The update is available for both the Switch and Switch 2 versions of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Despite its small file size, The Pokemon Company stated that Pokemon Legends: Z-A's version 1.0.1 update is necessary for the game's online modes to function. No other changes were listed in Pokemon Legends: Z-A's version 1.0.1 update notes. While a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not necessary to download and install the 1.0.1 update, Pokemon Legends: Z-A players will still need one to experience the game's online modes, such as trading and battling.

Trainers interested in collecting every Mega Stone in Pokemon Legends: Z-A must also participate in the game's ranked Battle Club mode, which will pit up to four players in a three-minute, free-for-all match. The items needed for Mega Evolving Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja will be rewarded to players who participate in ranked Battle Club matches. However, it is currently unclear how many online matches will be necessary for trainers to claim their prizes.
