Not everyone has access to a top-of-the-line gaming PC, and when it comes to finding an FPS game to play, it can actually be pretty hard to find one that runs well nowadays. So many titles focus all their energy on graphical fidelity or on revolutionary visual systems like ray-tracing, but as a result, optimization and performance falter, especially for those at the lower end of the spectrum.

However, in a sea of hardware-intensive games, there are still many greats that can be enjoyed by virtually anyone, regardless of whether they are rocking a dual GPU setup or a laptop in an airport lounge. These games show that a great gameplay loop, decent visuals, and even a compelling story can all exist without the need for insane graphics and a high-performance rig.

Team Fortress 2

Non-Stop Fun And Action

Team Fortress 2 changes Scout color.

Details:

  • Huge variety of maps and modes
  • Timeless art style that doesn't rely on insane graphics

Ever since the game released, TF2 has been a mainstay on the Steam charts, and part of why is due to how accessible it is. Not only is the gameplay incredibly easy to jump into, but thanks to Valve's expert optimization and the game's more cartoony aesthetic, players of all kinds can all experience the same match, no matter how explosive and chaotic things get.

It is pretty common to see people with standard Windows laptops or office-style desktops being able to hit triple-digit frames per second, and that's without having to fiddle around with any in-game settings as well. With so many new hero shooters releasing and the high system requirements they require, sometimes it is nice to step back and have a blast, knowing full well that performance will never be an issue.

BioShock

The Best A Singleplayer FPS Can Be

Details:

  • Atmospheric design and details
  • Beautiful without being demanding

BioShockis a name that any FPS fan will know all too well, being one of the greatest single-player games ever released, yet as amazing as the story is, many people forget how well it actually runs. It's an older game, so obviously, the demands are far lower, but despite its age, the visuals and the gameplay still hold up.

There are countless jaw-dropping vistas for players to admire, showing off the vastness of the underwater city in all its gloomy glory, and regardless of how many of these scenes they encounter, their FPS counter will never drop too far. For anyone who hasn't experienced BioShock yet, the game is right there waiting to be devoured, and with no hardware barriers in the way, there is literally no excuse to give it a go.

Half-Life 2

Valve Does It Again

Details:

  • Highly optimized source engine
  • Physics-driven gameplay

Valve has always been a frontrunner in the optimization world, and Half-Life 2is one of the best examples of just how good they really are. The early Source engine has so much character and flair, and that level extends to the actual gameplay, as players run, ride, and blast their way across the world with as much intensity as they could ever want.

Physics becomes a central mechanic that players are able to wield and use to their advantage, but as complex and well-designed as it is, the object collisions and interactions never result in a performance dip. This means that players can constantly move forward and feel as though they are in complete control over every single action, no matter what device they are choosing to play from.

Far Cry 3

A Full Open-World On Any System

Details:

  • Scales well across lower-end systems
  • Accessible yet in-depth open-world

Far Cry 3 offers a full open-world experience without requiring high-end hardware, something that is pretty hard to come by in the modern era. Its scalability ensures it can run on older machines while still delivering a satisfying and plain fun core gameplay loop that never gets old, no matter how far into the game players are.

The most impressive part comes from how consistent the world and the encounters are within it. There are no lapses in quality or any major filler sections, just raw and unrelenting action that players can be a part of from devices of all shapes and sizes.

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter

Scale That Never Compromises

Details:

  • Prioritizes performance above all else
  • Designed around fast, chaotic encounters

Large-scale fights and huge enemy numbers normally mean a serious performance hit, but in the case of Serious Sam HD, the hordes never become an issue. The engine is built to handle the insane amount of chaos efficiently, ensuring a consistent experience for the player even during the most intense encounters.

When it comes to the gameplay, things are straightforward but effective, giving players all the tools they need to destroy anything that moves, whilst keeping the performance high at all times. Modern horde shooters might have the graphical lead, but Serious Sam proves that good gameplay can always speak for itself.
