Koenigsegg is running out of records to try and beat with its ever-faster hypercars. So this time it went to Laguna Seca in California and it beat one of its own. Sadair's Spear, the rocketship named for a horse ridden by von Koenigsegg's dad, has gone for a lap around the famous corkscrew and come back with a new one. It set a new fastest laptime for a production car around the iconic 2.2-mile circuit.
Laguna Lapping Not For The Faint Of Heart
Don't stop us if you think you've heard this one before, but it's been a tight race to be the fastest around this circuit. Helped by the shorter distance and better availability, more than a few hypercar companies have headed to Laguna Seca searching for glory.
Koenigsegg first notched a record for "fastest homologated production car" in August 2024. The Jesko Attack and driver Markus Lundh visited the circuit for the first time and marked a 1:24.86 lap.
Later the same month, Czinger brought its 21C to the track and eked out a 1:24.75. That may or may not have counted, depending on whom you asked, because the Czinger wasn't technically in production yet. Czinger had held the time the Jesko Attack beat, with a half-second-slower lap set in 2021.
It didn't matter for long, because a year later Koenigsegg is back on top. The Sadair's Spear galloped around the track to a time of 1:24.16. Once again, the Swedish supercar company has the lap record at the track for homologated production cars.
That last line is why, if you're wondering, the McMurtry Spéirling and its 1:18 time doesn't count. That car is planned for production, but while it can drive upside down, it hasn't gone into production.
