In news that's bad for just about everyone – even companies heavily involved in electric cars – gas prices across the US have just hit another high. The nationwide average has crested $4.10 for a gallon of regular, and five states are now showing an average gas price more than $5 for a gallon of the cheap stuff. If that's not high enough, just wait until you see the figures for diesel.

According to AAA data, the nationwide average for a gallon of regular unleaded this morning was $4.111. If you want mid-grade, it'll cost $4.592, and premium is $4.969. Which is even more painful when you remember that in some states, premium is only 91 octane. The premium price might hit especially hard considering the number of turbocharged vehicles on the roads these days. Turbocharged engines often need premium to achieve optimal performance and efficiency. In some cases, manufacturers require premium in their turbo mills.

Still, current prices are still a long way from the record high for regular of $5.016 that happened in June 2022. But there are few indications that the current trend will stop, or even slow down for that matter.

If you live in California, you're probably already used to paying more for gas. The average for a gallon of regular is now $5.949 in that state, much closer than most states to its own record, which was $6.438 set in 2022.

The most expensive county in the state, and therefore the home to the most expensive in the database, is Mono county. With a population of just 13,000, at least the neighboring Tuolumne County is one of the cheapest. That's $6.883 versus $5.688, showing that shopping around isn't always a waste of time.

After California, you'll find $5 gas per gallon in Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada. Though Nevada has crossed the mark by just three cents per gallon. However, Alaska isn't far behind at $4.801, nor is Arizona.

Meanwhile in the land of oil-burners, the current average for a gallon of diesel is $5.449, reflecting higher demand and lower supply for that fuel. That price is just 37 cents below the all-time high set in 2022.

Both California and Hawaii now have diesel prices above $7 per gallon, with California being the highest at $7.477. Three more are above $6, and more than half of the country is above $5.
