Sound Off: Are You Ready to Join the Space Force?

During a speech to troops at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, President Donald Trump mused about his idea to launch a "space force," a sixth military branch devoted to interplanetary service.

With this idea, Trump seems poised to deliver on a promise that goes all the way back to the 1950s with Commander Buzz Corry and "Space Patrol."

The opportunities created by science and atomic power after World War II led generations of young people to dream of bringing democracy to the universe. "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" have filled the emotional gaps in the decades since the Challenger space shuttle explosion derailed NASA and American investment in winning the space race.

Captain James T. Kirk has been waiting decades for this moment.

Trump is excited about what he sees as a recent increase in space research, something he believes would've never happened under a Clinton Mark II administration.

"You're seeing the rockets going up left and right; you haven't seen that for a long time. Very soon we're going to Mars. We wouldn't be going to Mars if my opponent won, that I can tell you."

The ghosts of Apollo 1 astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee want Americans to get right on this.

Then, he went freestyle and let the troops in on his thought process here.

"You know, I was saying the other day because we're doing a tremendous amount of work in space, maybe we need a new force. We'll call it the space force," Trump said. "And I was not really serious, and then I thought, 'Maybe that's a great idea. Maybe we'll have to do that.' "

There are entire galaxies just waiting to feel the tip of the spear.

Space combat is going to be incredibly expensive and extremely dangerous, but those concerns don't seem like a big deal when balanced against the pure awesomeness of WARRIOR ASTRONAUTS.

So, are you ready to make the investment? Does the USA need its own cosmic force? Are you ready to serve in space? Sound off!
