Now that baseball season has officially begun, keep an eye out for a hat-tip to the Navy during San Diego home games.
The Padres obtained permission from the Navy Trademark Licensing office within the Office of Naval Research to use the Navy's blue camouflage digital pattern on their player jerseys, according to a release from ONR. That pattern, known affectionately as "aquaflage" or "blueberries" can be found on the Navy Working Uniform Type 1.
“The past few seasons, the Padres honored the Marine Corps,” Nadine Villanueva Santiago, manager of the Navy Trademark Licensing Office, said in the ONR release. “The team decided to honor another service, and the Navy was a perfect fit due to its strong presence in the area. When the Padres reached out to us, we thought it would be an excellent opportunity to spotlight the Navy.”
The Padres rolled out the camouflage jersey look last December on the flight deck of the carrier Theodore Roosevelt at Naval Air Station North Island, across San Diego Bay from Petco Park, where the Padres will play their home games.
Navy camo replica jerseys will be sold at the team store, with a portion of proceeds from each sale going to the Navy, according to the release.
“These types of partnerships between the Navy and sports teams are tremendously valuable as they promote a positive image of the Navy and help inspire a greater sense of pride and patriotism among Sailors and the public,” Capt. Robert Palisin, assistant chief of naval research, said in a statement.
