A recent graduate holds a degree and smiles.

Although you have surely heard of CLEP tests, you may not know that these credit-by-exam tests are widely accepted by colleges and universities. In addition, by passing these examinations you can earn one-third or more of the credits you need for a college degree.

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. Developed by the College Board, CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program, available at more than 2,900 colleges and universities.

Even better, if you are on active duty you can take the CLEP test for free! If you're a veteran you can use your GI Bill benefits to help pay for the test.

CLEP offers 33 exams in five subject areas, covering material taught in courses that you may generally take in your first two years of college. By passing a CLEP exam, you can earn 3 to 12 college credits in a college level course of study.

CLEP exams test mastery of college-level material acquired in a variety of ways — through general academic instructions, significant independent study or extracurricular work. CLEP exam-takers include adults just entering or returning to school, military service members and traditional college students.

The 90 to 120-minute exams are administered at over 1,800 colleges across the country and on-base testing centers worldwide. Credits are granted for successful scores at 2,900 colleges and universities.
