National Guard Soldier Fatally Shot Ex's Boyfriend While on Drill Duty Break, Feds Say

A National Guard member is charged with murder in a shooting that triggered a lockdown at a military base in Georgia, federal prosecutors said.

Natravien Landry, 25, of Abbeville, Louisiana, fatally shot a man early in the morning Saturday, Dec. 14, at his ex’s residence in Fort Eisenhower, just southwest of downtown Augusta, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia said in a Dec. 16 news release.

McClatchy News reached out to Landry’s attorney Dec. 17 but did not immediately receive a response.

The victim was later identified in a Fort Eisenhower news release as U.S. Army Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr., who served as a member of the 400th Military Police Brigade in Fort Meade, Maryland, WJBF reported.

According to an affidavit, Landry reported for drill duty at 4:45 a.m. and was released for an hourlong break at 7 a.m.

Then the 25-year-old soldier drove to his ex’s house on the base, where he shot Stewart, prosecutors said.

Landry’s ex — with whom he shares a child — later told federal investigators she woke up to a “commotion” in her bedroom and saw him standing near the entrance, according to the affidavit.

A few moments later, Landry — who authorities said had previously expressed jealousy toward Stewart — recognized he was in the room and fired a gun, the affidavit said.

Stewart was taken to a medical center at the base where he was pronounced dead, according to the affidavit.

At about 8:50 a.m. Dec. 14, Fort Eisenhower issued a lockdown message on Facebook.

Landry left the base but was later stopped by Meriwether County deputies on an interstate in Georgia and taken to jail, the affidavit said.

In an interview with investigators, Landry said he shot Stewart, according to the affidavit.

He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 18, records show.

“Our focus at this time is providing support to the victim’s family and assistance to anyone impacted by this tragedy,” Fort Eisenhower officials said in a Dec. 14 Facebook post.

The Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division continues investigating the case, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
