Soldier Shot After Allegedly Threatening Fort Bliss MPs with Handgun

U.S. Army military police at Fort Bliss, Texas, shot and wounded a soldier who was allegedly armed with a pistol on post just after midnight Tuesday morning.

MPs were responding to a "bystander report of a disturbance on base" when the 1st Armored Division soldier produced a handgun and "presented an armed direct threat to law enforcement," according to a Fort Bliss news release.

The wounded soldier, who has not been identified, was taken to El Paso Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment, the release states.

No one else was injured in the incident, the release states.

Special agents with the Army Criminal Investigation Command have recovered the soldier's handgun and are investigating the shooting, according to the release.

"While we may not understand yet why the event occurred, we have confidence in our law enforcement to determine the facts of how this morning's event unfolded," the release states. "The safety of our Fort Bliss community remains our top priority."
