A Marine guard transported from the Home of the Commandants in Washington, D.C. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound is now in good condition, officials told Military.com this week.

The Marine, who has not been identified, was reported shot in the morning of June 15 and taken to George Washington University Hospital, officials with Marine Barracks Washington said. While officials initially characterized the incident as a negligent discharge, they later walked that back, saying they could only confirm it was a self-inflicted wound. No further characterization of the incident has been given.

The Marine was transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland on June 16, Capt. Colleen McFadden, a spokeswoman for the barracks, said Tuesday.

No further information has been released about the nature of the incident or any additional actions the Marine Corps plans to take.
