Nevada Military and Veteran Income Taxes

Military Retiree Income Tax

No state income tax.

Active-Duty Income Tax

No state income tax.

Nevada Veteran Property Taxes

The Wartime Veteran's Tax Exemption is available to Nevada resident veterans with wartime service. The exemption can be applied to the vehicle privilege tax or real property tax. To obtain the exact amount of this benefit, veterans should contact their county assessor.

Nevada also offers a property tax exemption to honorably discharged resident veterans with a service-connected disability of 60% or more. This exemption can be applied to a veteran's vehicle tax or personal property tax. The surviving spouse may also be eligible.

Nevada Military and Veteran Education Benefits

Military/Veteran Education

Military personnel receive a waiver of non-resident fees.

The University of Nevada system may grant a waiver of tuition and laboratory fees for active members of the state National Guard. Members may also transfer their eligibility for the waiver to immediate family members.

Veterans who have received the Purple Heart are eligible for free tuition at any state school. Veterans do not have to be a Nevada resident.

Military Dependent Education

Spouses and children of active-duty service members and members of the Nevada National Guard receive a waiver of nonresident fees.

Members of the Nevada National Guard can transfer their 100% in-state tuition waiver to their spouse or dependent child.

Nevada Military and Veteran Employment Benefits

Veteran Hiring Preference

Disabled veterans receive a 10-point preference, and all other honorably discharged veterans, including Guard and reserve members, receive a 5-point preference.

Military Spouse Employment

No state benefits.

Nevada Veteran Housing and Veterans Homes

Veterans Homes

Nevada's two veterans homes are in Boulder City and Sparks. The homes are open to Nevada resident veterans who require skilled nursing care. Spouses and Gold Star parents may be eligible for admission. There is a cost for care.

Homeless Veterans

No specific benefits.

Adaptive Housing

No specific benefits.

Nevada Veteran Financial Assistance

Nevada National Guard members and their immediate families are eligible for a three-day sales tax exemption for the Nevada Day holiday.

Dependents of an active-duty member killed in the line of duty while permanently stationed in Nevada may be eligible for a financial grant that does not require repayment.

Nevada Veteran Legal Assistance

The Nevada Attorney General's Office of Military Legal Assistance (OMLA) provides pro bono legal assistance and representation to active duty, reserve and National Guard service members in a wide area of civil law matters. The OMLA also currently provides assistance to veterans with wills and powers of attorney.

Nevada Military and Veteran Recreation Benefits

Hunting/Fishing

Nevada resident veterans with a service-connected disability of at least 50% may receive a free hunting and fishing license.

The state will issue a discounted combination hunting and fishing license to residents stationed outside of Nevada and home on leave.

Parks/Camping

Honorably discharged resident veterans with a permanent disability of 10% or more may receive a pass for free entrance to all state parks, camping and boat launch facilities. There is a low annual renewal fee.

Nevada Veteran Transportation Benefits

No state-provided transportation benefits. Disabled American Veterans (DAV) offers van rides to VA medical centers in many states and may be available in the states without a state-funded transportation benefit.

Nevada Veteran Burial Benefits

Veterans Cemeteries

Nevada's two veterans cemeteries are in Fernley and Boulder City. There is no charge for the plot, vault or opening and closing of a gravesite for a veteran. A small fee is charged for the burial of a spouse or dependent of a veteran.
