Since 1879, Armed Forces Mutual has supported the financial well-being of military families, ensuring they are protected through every stage of military life and beyond. Its mission is exclusively offered to members of the military community whose service to the Nation qualifies them for the security and peace of mind that come with Membership.
Here’s who qualifies for membership and coverage.
Membership Eligibility
Eligibility to apply for Armed Forces Mutual Life Insurance and become a member includes the following groups:
- Active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces
- National Guard and Reserve members (full- or part-time)
- U.S. Military Academy (USMA), Naval Academy (USNA), Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), and U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) cadets or midshipmen
- ROTC cadets under contract or on scholarship
- Military retirees
- Veterans (subject to state licensing restrictions for insurance)
Once approved and insured, members may purchase additional policies for themselves and eligible family members.
Life Insurance Options
Armed Forces Mutual Term and Whole Life Products:
- Various levels of coverage are available to all members and their spouses, regardless of their stage in the military journey.
- Children and grandchildren of Members may be eligible, depending on their age and selected policy. For example, younger children may qualify for a whole life plan such as Generations Plus, while adult children may qualify for certain term products.
Guaranteed Acceptance Options
- Two policies are available that require no underwriting because there are no medical exams or health questions: Guaranteed Acceptance+ and Final Expense+.
- Eligible applicants include veterans, retirees, spouses, and adult children.
- Applicants must otherwise qualify for Armed Forces Mutual Membership and reside in a state where the coverage is approved for issuance.
Guaranteed Coverage for Young, Active Members
Programs like BeyondBasic® provide guaranteed acceptance for eligible active-duty, Guard, or Reserve members who meet specific criteria, including recent entry or successful completion of a health physical within nine months of application.
Armed Forces Mutual Life insurance policies include no war, aviation, or terrorism exclusions. Members may keep their coverage after leaving the military and, in many cases, add additional policies over time. All policies include Survivor Assistance Services to support families following a loss.
