A recent Navy nuclear limited duty officer promotion board was conducted virtually for the first time. The NPC Submarine/Nuclear Officer Career Management Division planned and created procedures for the process and held five mock boards starting in July of last year. Technical issues proved to be a challenge, but the official board was completed virtually in just eighteen hours. In comparison, a traditional board would include travel time for the members and the time and space to conduct the board, often a matter of several days or even a week or more. Navy officials said the trial run was a success, but that a suite of software specific to the virtual board process is needed rather than combining existing resources.
