A member of the Alaska Army National Guard was presented with a Bronze Star medal Nov. 19 for service during a deployment to Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013. Maj. Javier Lopez serves as a legal adviser to the adjutant general. But when he deployed to Afghanistan he was the first Puerto Rico Army National Guard trial defense service attorney assigned to a deployed active-duty trial defense field office. During the deployment, he successfully supported many legal actions including three contested courts-martial, six summary courts-martial and more than 200 administrative actions, according to a recent release.
