Tricare offers limited vision benefits depending on your beneficiary status and what type of coverage you have. Medically necessary vision benefits are available under all Tricare plans.

Most dependents and retirees are also eligible for vision insurance through the FEDVIP program. Some veterans may also be eligible for vision benefits from the VA.

Active Duty Members & Activated Guard/Reserve

Active duty members & activated guard & reserve members can get a yearly eye exam and military-issued glasses as necessary from their medical/vision clinic. Sunglasses are available if mission necessary.

Dependents of Active Duty Members

Normally, dependents using Tricare Prime can get an eye exam every two years at a Military Treatment Facility or authorized location. Glasses are only available if certain serious medical conditions exist. Those using Tricare Select aren't eligible for any vision benefits unless they are related to other serious health issues.

Dependents who sign up and pay for the FEDVIP vision insurance program can normally get an eye exam and free or discounted glasses or contact lenses every year depending on what vision plan they choose.

Some U.S. Family Health Plan programs also offer vision benefits.

Retirees & Their Dependents

Retirees & their dependents are in the same situation as active duty dependents.

Tricare Prime enrollees can get an eye exam every two years. They can also order glasses from the Navy if they aren't near a Military Treatment Facility.

Retirees & their dependents who sign up and pay for the FEDVIP vision insurance program can normally get an eye exam and free or discounted glasses or contact lenses every year depending on what vision plan they choose.

Veterans

Veterans who have any VA disability that they are getting compensation for are eligible for a free eye exam and glasses from the VA. There are other veterans who qualify, like those with a Purple Heart, getting VA pension, and more.
