Retired two-star says he will focus on enhancing the information, resources and user experience for service members, veterans and their families of state veteran employment resources

McLean, Va – Military.com and parent company Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW) announced the selection today of a retired two star Navy Admiral as the new President of the nation’s leading military website.

Greg Smith will take the reins at Military.com which serves over 10 million members and welcomes roughly 8 million unique visitors a month.  The site, which is a news and benefits information resource, also features sophisticated veteran employment tools like the Military Skills Translator, and the Transition Center which helps active duty service members plan for their transition to civilian life. The site has close to 2 million “Likes” on Facebook and was listed in the 2014 Blue Star Families Annual Survey as one of the top online resources for information for military families. Veteran employment has been an area in which Monster has played a big role and helps position veterans to be seen by their extensive employer community through the veteran resume database which features 970,000 veteran resumes.

Smith, who will be both the President of Military.com and a Vice President at Monster, retired from the Navy in 2011. He held several high profile positions as an Admiral, including leading the communication efforts of U.S. and NATO operations in Afghanistan, and as head of public affairs for U.S. operations in Iraq.  In addition, Smith served in key leadership roles as Director of Communication at U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida and as the Navy’s Chief of Information in Washington, DC.  Smith has an extensive national security background with multiple tours of duty in the Pentagon, and overseas in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to lead the Military.com team. This is a group of dedicated individuals focused on  ensuring military members, veterans, retirees and their families have access to the latest and most accurate military news and information via a world-class website,” said Smith.

Smith went on to say that current events make Military.com even more important as an online information source.

“Over one million veterans are returning to civilian life over the next couple of years and at the same time we have emerging national security threats that our men and women in uniform may be called upon to resolve. All the while we are experiencing the effects of a decade-plus engagement in the Middle East and the impact it has had on our service members and their families. Miltary.com, and the news and information it provides plays a critical role in the advancing the national dialogue on these critical issues.”

Executive Vice President of Monster, Steve Cooker commented, “Greg understands the role Military.com plays in the lives of our service members, veterans and their families and I have every confidence he will hit the ground running with the same energy and enthusiasm he has displayed throughout his notable and successful military career.”

Military.com was founded in 1999 by a former Navy reservist and provides free membership to military members, veterans, their families and those who want to be kept informed on defense-related issues. The site features a twice daily news cycle with established defense correspondents providing stories that cover all service branches along with veteran issues. The site also features reference information on benefits, employment, education, pay and allowances and transition assistance for those leaving the military. In 2004, Military.com joined forces with Monster Worldwide to change the playing field for career and educational opportunities for service members, veterans and military spouses.
