A job interview is your chance to show employers that you are a knowledgeable, professional and self-possessed applicant. And in the past, you've shown potential employers that you are all of those characteristics by answering all of their interview questions impeccably.
However, more employers are using a new technique in their interviews. In the middle of a great job interview, you might get thrown a curveball, in the form of a crazy interview question such as, "Tell me 10 other uses for a pencil other than writing."
At first, you may seem perplexed by such a ridiculous inquiry, but the interviewer has a reason for asking you this crazy question.
By answering the standard questions -- "Tell us about your background" or, "What are your professional goals?" -- you have proved that you have the technical knowledge and expertise to handle the job. But a quirky or crazy question is designed to test your sense of humor, creativity and ability to think on your feet.
Here are seven questions that will keep you on your toes:
- How many times do a clock's hands overlap in a day?
- How would you weigh a plane without scales?
- What are three positive character traits you don't have?
- If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?
- With your eyes closed, tell me step by step how to tie my shoes.
- Tell me one thing about yourself you wouldn't want me to know.
- Why is there fuzz on a tennis ball?
When you're asked these oddball questions, it's important not to get flustered or preoccupied with giving the "right answer," reports CreativeInterview.com. Try to take a deep breath, repeat the question to yourself and answer honestly.
If you feel flustered, relax. Remember, the interviewer is not trying to embarrass you or make you feel more nervous. The goal is to gauge your personality in addition to your professionalism.
