More than 530 U.S. Air Force Academy cadets from the 2019 graduating class have been matched to attend pilot training pending final qualifications and commissioning. This is a 26 percent increase over the 2018 class. The Academy is also focused on its part in solving the Air Force’s ongoing pilot shortage. The Academy is planning to add flight courses to the sophomore and senior year. The Academy is also working closely with Air Education and Training Command to produce a percentage of advanced candidates capable of bypassing Initial Flight Training, further reducing the timeframe for getting new pilots into their specific airframes.
